Widcombe Farm is part of a busy conservation scheme, presenting a tranquil environment, harmonized with nature. Farming needs to work with, and not against nature, and responsibility for the welfare of both the animals and the land, are taken very seriously.
The Farm operates with the HLS scheme under the guidance of Natural England, which provides advice to help farmers and land managers to improve their land for the benefit of wildlife, landscape, public access and other environmental purposes.
The Chew Valley Lake and River Chew run through the middle of the Farm, supporting a huge variety of both Flora and Fauna, and great care is taken with land management in the protection and support of both.
The farm has added two Wild Duck ponds, and cares for 50 acres of Woodland, situated in the Chew Valley itself. The Barn Owl scheme has introduced Owl Boxes in certain areas, and breeding numbers have increased over recent years.
We have won Two Duchy Habitat Awards for Land management, and continue to strive to make further improvements to protect our environment.
